01 · IN THE ROOM

The experience.

The Michael Fowler Centre is a 1983 sculptural concrete drum sitting on Wellington's Civic Square between the harbour and the Town Hall. Miles Warren designed it as a single tiered fan, 2,209 seats raked steeply back from the stage, bare cast-concrete walls offset with timber. The acoustic is warm despite the brutalist palette. New Zealand Symphony Orchestra records here. The harbour-side foyer at intermission catches the Cook Strait southerly straight in the face; bring a jumper, the views are worth it.
