01 · IN THE ROOM

The experience.

QPAC sits on the South Bank where the Brisbane River curves. Robin Gibson's 1985 modernist complex was Australia's first dedicated multi-venue arts centre, and the Concert Hall inside is built around a 6,566-pipe Klais organ that runs floor-to-ceiling behind the stage. The signature acoustic feature is the starry-night ceiling: a constellation of recessed reflectors that double as recessed lights. Queensland Symphony Orchestra plays here. The free lunchtime organ recitals on selected weeks are the secret. The room is the most-considered classical space in northern Australia.
