01 · IN THE ROOM

The experience.

Theatro Municipal sits at the south corner of Cinelândia square in central Rio. The 1909 building is a Brazilian half-size copy of the Paris Opéra, Charles Garnier's design respun in Carioca marble and gold leaf. The horseshoe seats 2,357. The stained-glass dome over the foyer is the most photographed interior in central Rio. Brazilian summer humidity could ruin the room. Instead, the architects vented it so the air moves and the wood breathes. The opera and ballet seasons run year-round. Standing-room tickets day-of are R$30. The cheapest seat in Latin American opera.
