Butik is the electronic-music headline at Tolmin. Five days in mid-July, the boutique festival on the Sotočje camping ground at the confluence of the Soča and the Tolminka, glacial-green water that runs cold enough at midsummer to take the breath out of you. Julian peaks rising on both sides. Three stages, an intimate capacity, a programme of melodic techno and house and the deeper minimal cuts that the Slovenian electronic scene has quietly become known for. Swimming between sets is part of the festival. The water is the loudest thing in the valley. The Soča valley site hosts five other festivals through the summer (Sajeta in early July, Tolminator and MetalDays in late July, Punk Rock Holiday in early August, OverJam Reggae mid-August, Sonica in late August), but Butik is the one with the river-and-electronic combination that defines what this site is famous for.
Butik is the boutique electronic headline and the festival to pick if the river-and-music combination is what you came for. The other Tolmin festivals run different programmes through the summer: Sajeta is the longest-running art and music programme, Tolminator and MetalDays are the loudest, Punk Rock Holiday is the most distinct lineup, OverJam is the gentlest, Sonica is the youngest and most experimental.
Boutique electronic festival on a glacial river in the Julian Alps. The Soča valley does half the listening work, the programme does the rest. Six festivals a summer share the site; Butik is the one Sonic Paths features.
Sajeta in early July is the headline programme, the longest-running festival on the site since 1998 and the most-rounded editorially. Butik (boutique electronic) follows mid-July, Tolminator/MetalDays late July, Punk Rock Holiday early August, OverJam Reggae mid-August, Sonica late August. Swimming in the Soča between sets is part of the deal; the water is glacial.
July and August festival window, six festivals back-to-back. Each is its own programme; Sotočje camping ground hosts all. Stages run afternoon through to early morning.
