Northcote Social Club is the back room of an 1854 Melbourne corner pub. The bandroom has a pressed-tin ceiling, a raked wooden floor, one curtain backdrop, and the prototypical Melbourne pub-bandroom acoustic that turns 1980s post-punk-influenced Australian indie into something resembling a school-hall recording. Courtney Barnett did six-night residencies here pre-arena. So did Big Thief, Phoebe Bridgers, Sharon Van Etten. The front bar opens onto High Street tram traffic. Order your drink, watch the band, walk home through Northcote's quiet streets.
Six-night residencies by emerging touring acts are the room's signature. The front bar is open earlier; the bandroom doors at 20:00.
Tier 2 venue with editorial heft. The room where Melbourne bands graduate from pub to theatre.
Touring season runs year-round, four to five nights a week. Wednesday and Thursday emerging-act bookings are the gems. The front bar opens earlier; the bandroom doors at 20:00.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, doors 18:00 in front bar, 20:00 in bandroom. Tickets through the venue website. Closed Mondays.
Tram 86 from Melbourne CBD to High Street/Westgarth (Stop 28), opposite the venue. From Flinders Street, 25 minutes by tram. From Melbourne Airport, 45 minutes via SkyBus and tram.
